VP, Software Engineering

Job Description:

The Consumer Applications Software Engineering team brings the consumer experience to life in a flexible, efficient, and effective manner by architecting and building innovative, reliable, and quality software solutions for our consumer-facing web and mobile applications that strives to “make car buying easy.” This includes the consumer facing car shopping experience for both new and used cars.

As VP, Software Engineering, you’ll lead this function with teams dedicated to consumer application development, quality automation, internal tools and overall architecture solutions across our auto-buying platform. You will define and lead the consumer applications technology strategy and innovations that can enable and power product innovations and development velocity.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead the engineering teams responsible for building TrueCar’s shopping experiences and product features across new and used cars

  • Directly manage and mentor a team of engineering leaders and architects to broaden their skills, increase their day-to-day effectiveness, and ultimately grow their careers.

  • Partner closely with the CTO and the broader Technology Leadership team to drive the Technology strategy and build capabilities in the people and processes to ensure effectiveness and success of the technology organization.

  • Build strong and trusting partnerships with Business leaders and particularly with Product, to ensure that Engineering is in lock-step with strategy and absolutely aligned with the Product vision.

  • Build an inclusive and performance driven team culture and inspire engineering teams to collaborate together as a cohesive and highly productive unit

What you’ll need:

  • 5+ years of experience building and leading large, geo-distributed, performance driven effective teams

  • 10+ years of experience in software development building large scale consumer products

  • Experience in managing large teams with next line managers/Directors

  • Strong ability to inspire, lead by example, grow leaders and hire top talent

  • Proven track record of leading large scale cross functional initiatives

  • Deep understanding and commitment to software engineering best practices and principles (such as Agile and CI/CD) and continuous improvement through measurement

  • Strong executive presence and experience working across organizational boundaries, forming alliances with other VP leaders and Executives, and building bridges that support functional as well as company goals.

  • Strong Product and business thinking

  • Ability to review and critique engineering design and architectural decisions

  • Outstanding and compelling written and verbal communication skills. We’re a distributed organization and clear writing is especially important to ensure that we’re all pulling in the same direction.

  • Hands-on technical experience with any of the following: Ruby on Rails, React, AWS, Node.js, RESTful API, GraphQL, etc.

  • BS/MS in Computer Science or related field, and/or relevant experience
