We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to be a key back-end contributor to our image ingestion and formation pipelines. The individual filling this position will build and maintain data pipelines that process SAR data into imagery products for Umbra’s customers. If you have experience parsing binaries and designing distributed processing systems, you will feel at home on the Processing team at Umbra. As an early contributor, they will play a key role in Umbra’s efforts toward redefining how space radar data is consumed. This position can be located in Santa Barbara CA, Austin TX, or Fully Remote.

Key Responsibilities

• Build, test, and maintain applications that aggregate and process our satellite data, do quality assurance, and interface with external systems
• Provide key software architecture expertise to cross-functional engineering and product teams
• Help establish and adhere to DevOps practices that ensure that customer and satellite-operational needs are met with quality and performance

Basic Qualifications

• 5 - 7 years of professional experience developing highly available web services with server-side languages, preferably Python
• Experience designing systems which distribute processing across machines
• Experience with a workflow engine (e.g. Argo)
  
• Ability to demonstrate foundational understanding of software architecture, event-driven microservices, interface design, and automated testing patterns
• Experience with database-backed applications and relational database concepts
• Good communications skills, ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, and willingness to learn new skills and technology

Things You Will Learn

• Experience with SAR or other remote sensing data
• Experience debugging/parsing binaries
• Experience designing or implementing applications for image processing/formation
• Strong understanding of infrastructure monitoring principles, best practices, and implementation
• Experience designing and documenting commercial APIs with Swagger/OpenAPI
