The Operation Engineer 2 provides support in Grid Operations with real time engineering assistance and analysis to support operations and maintenance of SCE’s distribution grid. These engineers work closely with stakeholders internal to grid operations and outside, working to build and maintain strong relationships with all departments being supported.

Distribution Operations Engineers facilitate localized switching center support through recommendations for capital efforts and projects, DER support, Real time studies for substation equipment, VAR and voltage support, Abnormal field condition review, as well as support for complex switching situations. Engineers regularly interface with Transmission System Engineers, Distribution Operation Center, Field Engineering, The Grid Control Center, and Distribution Apparatus.

A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!

• Studies and/or support Program Writing in the development of switching programs for outages
• Support the installation of temporary generators for emergency switching
• Assist and review emergent switching and planned switching procedures with high penetration of DERs.
• Troubleshoot real-time distribution power issues and provide recommendations to system operators.
• Analyze load flow, voltage, thermal overload, and collaborate with Protection Engineering and Field Engineering for solutions.
• Support the System Operator during high fire conditions, including protection analysis, PSPS recommendations and system restoration.
• Support the System Operator during storm conditions, including weekends and after hours.
• Support Distribution Automation with new/existing systems and pilots.
• Experience in the area of power system engineering analysis
• Ability to communicate technical concepts to both a technical and non-technical audience, including external customers
• Ability to stay current with relevant technology and innovation

The essentials

• Two years of Engineering experience
• Bachelor of Science in Engineering

The preferred

• Two or more years of distribution engineering experience
• Professional Engineer’s License
• Knowledge of applicable regulations, standards, codes, and analysis software such as CYME, MDI, Heat Storm Tracker, SORL Lotus Notes, EMS/DMS/OMS, CAPE and ASPEN
• Experience using Advanced Excel, PowerPoint, Access
• Ability to stay current with relevant technology and innovation
• Experience with utility distribution, planning, operations and distribution equipment

You should know

• This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage.
