About Asset Strategy and Planning (ASP)
Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Asset Strategy & Planning (ASP) is responsible for planning and prioritizing the work that proceed to engineering and constructing in support of operating and maintaining safe and reliability transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. ASP is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 15 million residents via SCE’s 5 million customer accounts. ASP is also responsible for the technical review and approval of DERs which interconnect to the Distribution Grid in accordance with Safety and Regulatory requirements.
Position Overview
The Engineer 2 for the Distribution Generation Interconnection (DGI) team in Asset Strategy and Planning (ASP) is responsible for the technical analysis related to the interconnection of generation to the SCE Distribution System under the Rule 21 Tariff and Wholesale Distribution Access (WDAT) Tariff. The analyses to connect DERs to the SCE Distribution grid include performing studies to identify interconnection facilities and/or Distribution Upgrades necessary to connect these resources safely and reliably. The scope that is identified by the engineers can include but is not limited to new distribution circuits, service transformer upgrades, secondary cable upgrades. Additionally, the Engineer 2 is also responsible to support distribution-related activities, such as support for strategic objectives and participation in related regulatory activities (e.g., General Rate Case, Rule 21 changes, etc.) with internal and external stakeholders.
The Engineer 2 will lead the various activities to support the studies required to interconnect the DERs, which include Fast Track Evaluations, Independent, Facilities and Cluster Studies and any other related efforts associated with meeting Tariff requirements. The Engineer 2 will also lead efforts in evolving tools and developing new processes, such as adopting SCE Grid Modernization initiatives into the distribution planning process as may be directed by the manager.
The Engineer 2 may also provide guidance to newer engineers in the group and may be responsible for activities related to collaboration with various stakeholders internal and external to SCE. This can include representing the company needs at the local government agencies, CEC and CPUC, and may serve as an expert witness, as needed. The Engineer 2 will be responsible for ensuring accuracy of the studies performed and to ensure the accuracy of the publication of reports associated with the generation interconnection studies.
Typical Responsibilities:
  • Perform the required technical analysis and ensure studies are performed satisfactorily with sound technical recommendations
  • Develop distribution scope and projects for all levels of complexity, including licensing support to interconnect distributed energy resources safely and reliably
  • Work in close collaboration with various internal departments such as Asset Strategy and Planning, T&D, Engineering, System Operations, Grid Interconnection and Contract Development, Major Project Organization, Regulatory Policy and Affairs, Public Affairs, Real Estate, Telecomm, Finance, and Law
  • Coordinate distribution support of corporate objectives, such as the Wildfire Mitigation Plan, Pathway 2045, Transportation Electrification, and other strategic assessments and implementation
Serve as a company expert witness advocating the Company’s position at the CPUC on issues dealing with distribution generation interconnections as may be directed by manager
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • 2+ years as an Engineer or Power System Planner in an electric utility or power industry
  • 2+ years of experience using Engineering Software power system analysis platforms, data inputs, and study outputs
  • Experience identifying business problems and solutions to address identified problems related to data controls and management
  • Possess a valid Driver License
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering: Electrical, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
  • More than three years as an Engineer or Power System Planner in an electric utility or power industry with Transmission and/or Distribution electric system modeling or system planning focused experience
  • Strong communication and writing skills with the ability to communicate complicated technical issues in a succinct manner
  • Experience with power system transmission or distribution analysis tools, such as PowerWorld, PSLF, EMS, CYME, CAPE, ReGrid, and MDI or other similar software
  • Ability to interface effectively and collaborate with clients, peers, project personnel, and all levels of management enterprise-wide to develop solutions and ensure stakeholder buy-in
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in Power
  • CA Professional Engineering License in Electrical Engineering
