Staff Back End Software Engineer (Remote) @ Vytalize Health - Hoboken, NJ

What You Will Do

As a Staff Back End Software Engineer at Vytalize, you will work on advanced technology challenges, build top-notch software, mentor engineers, improve processes while working on agile teams, and partner closely with the engineering leadership to create next-level, scalable solutions that improve people's lives. You will promote advanced engineering techniques of test and behavior driven development, continuous integration and delivery, and test automation/test-driven development. You will promote a learning culture and continuous improvement.

You demonstrate customer obsession and will be a thought partner in architecting the technical and data ecosystem that will lead the way in delivering high-quality cost-effective care.

You will join our newly formed Platform & Services team, where each engineer on this team has their own area of specialization (front/back/data/infra), with the focus for this role on backend SWE with heavy emphasis on AWS Serverless.

The P&S team's core focus will be to build (greenfield) new reusable, self-servicing, and highly automated PoCs, scalable, reference architectures, reusable frameworks / templates, dashboards, and other valuable assets necessary to promote high-performing and proactive agile product teams. This is not a role where you will be placed on a product team and start doing task-based feature work.

If you are highly passionate about using OSS platforms (Kafka, Kubernetes, Mongo, self-managed Docker & servers, "cloud agnostic") you will not be happy in this role.

We have standardized on the AWS ecosystem wherever we can, with the goal of implementing simple, yet scalable and secure architecture. This will potentially include AWS api gateway, lambda, cognito, iam, event bridge, amplify, sam, app sync (graphql), dynamodb, aurora postgres, s3, glue, athena, quicksite, with other "data products". Every decision will be thoroughly vetted so that it will fulfill the needed business/technical capabilities and long-term vision.

Our front-end apps use React and Typescript, with backend architecture using Python as our first choice, and other languages as needed. We don't use Python just to use Python.

Duties

• Keep up to date with the latest tools, technologies, and strategies and introduce new ideas to the team.

• Design and implement new AWS serverless cloud applications.
• Mentor software engineers to improve skills while achieving sprint commitments and continuously improving.
• Collaborate with technical product management to align the architecture with the evolving product and data roadmaps.
• Demonstrate expertise with architectural strategies at the intersection of cloud first application development, big data systems, and data science/ML pipelines.
• Maintain a frictionless agile/lean development environment with a heavy emphasis on automation and testing.

• Design and develop software using TDD / BDD techniques and write automated tests.
• Create monitoring, scaling, and alerting infrastructure to ensure high performance, high availability, and highly secure applications.
• Maintain secure architecture and coding practices.
• Code reviews and pair programming.
• Integration with 3rd party platforms.

• Special projects and additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, related field, or equivalent work experience. Master's degree in computer science, related field preferred.
• 10+ years of professional experience.
• 5+ years of full-time SaaS application development with AWS and preferably Python.

• 5+ years of hands-on experience developing, deploying, and operating applications in AWS.
• 5+ years of developing APIs, using microservices, integrating with 3rd party platforms, and using open standard authorization protocols.
• 2+ years of experience using AWS Lambda, Amazon API Gateway, and other services to implement serverless architecture.
• 5+ years of experience using agile scrum development processes.
• Experience building event driven and evolutionary architectures.

• Experience in OO practices and TDD/BDD, SOLID, YAGNI, DDD, etc..
• Experience building and supporting production grade mission critical systems to support business needs, adhering to SLAs.
• Experience working with sensitive data and establishing development processes to secure data.
