Position Summary:

The Infection Preventionist/Employee Health RN, is a qualified individual with knowledge of CDC guidelines and definitions of nosocomial infections, JCAHO standards, federal and state regulations. She/He is responsible for the identification, investigation, reporting, prevention and control of nosocomial infections among patients and personnel. Under the Guidance of the Director of Infection Prevention and by authority of the Infection Control Committee, she/he may institute collection of cultures and initiate appropriate isolation precautions. She/He is responsible for assisting with inservice programs related to infection prevention and control education.
When needed, Provides superior employee/patient/customer satisfaction while ensuring the highest quality care and service. Coordinates medical care/health education and guidance for hospital employees through a comprehensive program that includes post-offer testing and assistance to employees who become ill and/or injured as a result of work. This position works closely with Industrial Medicine/Occupational Health, Infection Control and Nurse to help manage hospital-wide immunizations/inoculations to prevent spread of communicable diseases; monitors employee health to protect employees inclusive of outsourced/contracted and volunteer staff to help prevent injury and/or illness in a healthcare environment.

Infection Prevention:
    • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of complete infection control process in the health care setting.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of risk stratified statistics as applicable to trending nosocomial infections.
    • Demonstrates understanding of standard and isolation precautions as set forth by the CDC.
    • Attends continuing education programs and maintains current knowledge of all aspects of infection control.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of microbiology, and modes of transmission of decease entities.
  • Demonstrates ability to develop infection control policies and procedures.
    • Develops and implements a system for identifying, investigating, reporting and preventing the spread of nosocomial infections among patients of all ages and healthcare personnel.
    • Reviews cultures and sensitivities reported by microbiology laboratory of patients and personnel to determine if infection is nosocomial in origin.
    • Confers with staff nurses on all patient units on a regular basis to determine occurrence of nosocomial infections.
    • Confers with medical and nursing staff to determine appropriate implementation of isolation precautions.
    • Investigates infections, especially those occurring above established thresholds, and/or in clusters by patient units.
    • Initiates culture and sensitivity and/or appropriate isolation precautions when indicated.
    • Has input into the Employee Health Program and assists with follow-up of accidental exposure incidents.
    • Communicates appropriate reports to the IOP through the Infection Control Committee.
    • Assists with inservice education related to infection prevention and control house wide.
    • Completes required CMR reports to Public Health Department in a timely and accurate manner.
    • Maintains accurate records of nosocomial infections among patients and personnel.
    • Assists in the development, implementation and improvement of infection control practices.
    • Monitors proper use of germicides, cleaning products, antiseptics and disinfectants in use throughout the facility.
    • Reviews and/or revises all department policies and procedures related to infection control on a concurrent basis.
    • Communicates infection control activities to administration, the medical staff and MEC via the Infection Control Committee minutes and/or Infection Committee Chairperson.
    • Prepares statistics and other pertinent data and reports to the Infection Control Committee at least quarterly.
    • Implements and conduct special studies when appropriate or requested by the Infection Control Committee Chairperson.
    • Collaborates with the Infection Control Committee Chairperson to review and approve Infection Control Manual policies and procedures at least every two years.
    • Based on studies which identifies areas for improved patient outcomes, submits targeted surveillance indicators for Infection Control Committee approval on an annual basis.
    • Available by voice mail, spectra or in person to assist all departments regarding issues related to infection control.
    • Stays abreast of changing infection control practices and present plan for compliance in a timely manner.
    • Established effective interpersonal relationships with physicians, nurses, and all other members of healthcare team. Communicates in a manner that conveys mutual understanding and respect.
    • Designs and implements new methods to improve the efficacy and outcomes of the Infection Control Program.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of age specific care, including but not limited to, identifying the need for additional safety measures, physiological normal values/readings; and assessing skin integrity, behavior, motor skills and/or activities that place patients at risk as well as communicates effectively in a clear, concise, understandable manner. Employee Health (as needed basis):
  • Interprets the organization’s employee health policies and regulations for managers and staff.score: N/A
  • Interviews and expedites employees exposed to communicable diseases in the work environment for consultations with Health Screening RN for determination, prior to notifying IC.
  • Initiates and completes all required documentation, and provides follow up on employees exposed due to blood and body fluid. Provides injections and blood draw as needed for appropriate testing.
  • Collection of COC for cause on either ETOH/Urine drug screening while maintaining confidentiality in accordance with Federal guidelines. All results cleared through Industrial Medicine prior to submission to HR.
  • Collaborative collection of employee injury/illness information for compliance and reporting on OSHA log with Industrial Medicine and Human Resources. All information provided to HR for annual posting.
  • Coordinates post-offer and annual physical examinations as required. All examinations to be completed by the Nurse Practitioners or physicians.
  • Participates in formulating and administering company health and safety programs, i.e. Annual Flu Program. Assist, administers, and reads employee immunization programs as required.
  • May represent department in safety committee and infection control meetings as required. Recommends changes that will enhance facility safety in coordination with the Industrial Medicine Department.
  • Acts as a resource on related matters such as use of industrial materials, working environments, industrial hygiene, and safety programs.
  • Coordinates ongoing communication with Human Resources Department, Workers’ Compensation Administrator, Physicians, and employees.
  • Directs First-Aid and worker related injuries to the Industrial Medicine Department as needed.
  • Orders medicines and medical supplies as needed.
  • Assembles and uses various medical equipment.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, inservice meetings, and workshops.
  • Treats all people with respect and is responsive to their needs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications:
Minimum Education:
  • Graduate of a Nursing Program
  • Current California RN license

Preferred Education:
  • CIC preferred or eligible to obtain CIC, background in workers’ compensation preferred.
  • IV and Blood Withdrawal Certification preferred.
Minimum Work Experience and Qualifications:
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Computer skills needed; familiarity with MS office (Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, PPP).

Preferred Work Experience and Qualifications:
  • At least two years in a healthcare setting is preferred
Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:
  • BLS card
  • Fire Card
