In this exciting role as the Principal Tooling Engineer, you will be responsible for the management of injection mold tool build programs, overseeing the complete program management from part concept through to full scale production working with cross functional teams. You will establish and manage a supply base for high quality SPI class 101, 102, & 103 injection mold tools as well as highly qualified medical device molding suppliers. You will be responsible for trouble shooting molding and tooling issues and resolve in a timely manner.

Location : Irvine, CA (ONSITE)
Ability to travel up to : 25% Domestic and International
A Day in the Life
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
  • Manage injection mold tool build programs from concept through to production.
  • Audit injection mold tool builders throughout North America, Europe, Asia
  • Conduct mold design review with suppliers to ensure that all company tooling specifications are met.
  • Establish injection mold processes using scientific principals such as mold balance experiments, rheology studies, and gate seal experimentation.
  • Establish part measurement techniques for mold steel sizing to achieve short term mold / process capability of 1.33Cpk or better.
  • Manage project financials (travel, vendor payments, and capital spend forecasting)
  • Key trouble shooter for molding and tooling issues to recover Line Down issues
  • Assist in the development of Medtronic long range goals and plans for mold making and molding around the world.
Must Have (Minimum Requirements)

  • Requires a Baccalaureate degree (or for degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree which satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)( 4)(iii)(A) and minimum 10 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.
Nice to Have (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Bachelor degree in Engineering preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in injection molding, tool-build management preferred.
  • Practical knowledge of mold making and injection molding process.
  • Scientific Injection Molding concepts and use
  • Understanding of Tolerance Schemes and use for metrology output
  • Mold building knowledge including machining tolerances, steels, heat treating, plating, guidance, and stack up tolerances
  • Working knowledge of problem-solving techniques i.e., process map, risk assessment, cause and effect diagram, Pareto analysis etc.
  • Proficiency in Project Management to include negotiation, budget controls, and documentation
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Project and Minitab
