Hands-On Backend (Java) Engineering Manager - Greenfield AI Project

LOCATION: Irvine, CA. Monday through Thursday onsite, Fridays remote.

COMPENSATION: $100-125 an hour. This is a 2-year contract that will convert to full-time.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Position Overview: As the Hands-On Backend (Java) Engineering Manager, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of our greenfield AI project. You will lead a team of talented engineers, guiding them in the development of robust and scalable backend systems while actively contributing to the codebase. This is a unique opportunity to combine your leadership skills with hands-on technical expertise in a dynamic and forward-thinking environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technical Leadership:

• Lead a team of backend engineers, providing mentorship, guidance, and technical expertise.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including AI researchers, data scientists, and frontend developers, to drive project success.
• Design, develop, and maintain high-performance, reliable backend systems.

Hands-On Coding:

• Actively participate in coding, code reviews, and debugging to maintain a deep understanding of the project's technical aspects.
• Ensure code quality, scalability, and security standards are met throughout the development process.

Project Management:

• Develop and execute project plans, timelines, and resource allocation strategies.
• Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement within the engineering team.
• Monitor and report on project progress, identifying and mitigating risks as needed.

Team Development:

• Onboard, and retain top-tier engineering talent.
• Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback.
• Facilitate professional growth and skill development among team members.
• Evaluate and recommend new tools, frameworks, and technologies to enhance the project's capabilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Proven experience (5+ years) as a software engineer with a strong focus on Java backend development.
• Previous leadership or management experience, preferably as a team lead or engineering manager.
• In-depth knowledge of AI concepts, machine learning, or related fields is a significant plus.
• Proficiency in Java, along with experience with relevant frameworks and libraries.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make data-driven decisions.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
• A passion for innovation, AI, and a desire to work on a greenfield project.
