Job Summary
The Aerospace Corporation’s Experiment Lab, xLab, develops prototypes, instruments, pathfinders, and demonstration systems to address our customers’ hardest problems at the speed of need. We engage with our customers to conceptualize innovative solutions and deliver impactful products for ground and space and everything in between. As the FPGA Firmware Engineer you will lead the design of VHDL firmware in embedded digital electronics systems for space and ground-based prototypes. You will also work with customers and teammates to define system requirements, write FPGA firmware in VHDL and test the completed firmware on actual hardware.
This is a full-time position based in El Segundo, CA, offering a hybrid work model that combines regular onsite laboratory work and remote flexibility as the business needs allow.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Our team develops advanced space and ground-based prototypes to help solve our customer’s toughest problems
  • You will write and test FPGA firmware in VHDL for ground and spaced-based prototypes
  • In this role you will also assist with developing strategies for enhancing team capabilities and productivity in embedded system design and test

This position is available as a Senior Member of Technical Staff or Research Engineer

What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
Senior Member of Technical Staff
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited program in Electrical or Computer Engineering is required
  • Typically, 5 or more years of experience in FPGA and embedded systems design
  • Expertise in VHDL
  • Expertise with Xilinx and Microchip FPGAs and design tools
  • This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

Research Engineer
Same requirements as Senior Member of Technical Staff noted above, in addition to:
  • Typically, 8 or more years of experience in FPGA and embedded systems design.

How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
Senior Member of Technical Staff or Research Engineer
  • Verilog experience
  • Experience testing complex FPGA firmware and designing testbenches for SoCs
  • Experience using high-speed (1GHz+) SoC FPGA peripheral cores like SGMII, GigE and PCIe
  • Experience with soft-core AXI and AHB based microprocessors such as the Microblaze

The grade-based pay range for this job is listed below. Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.

$70,000 - $105,000 - $185,000
