Under general direction, the Principal Network Architect leads, manages, and participates in the analysis, design, development, and maintenance of large scale, multi-site local, wireless, and wide area network infrastructure for LACOE and its clients.

The Well Qualified Candidate Will Possess the Following

Knowledge:

  • Principles, practices, terminology, and trends of network planning, design, and engineering
  • Principles and practices of network security
  • Principles and practices of network control protocols and network routing protocols
  • Principles and practices of enterprise network architecture design
  • Principles and practices of LAN/WLAN/WAN and TCP/IP operations
  • Network diagnostic and troubleshooting techniques
  • Various networking tools and equipment from platforms and vendors such as Fortinet, Palo Alto, Aruba, Arista, Juniper, and Cisco
  • Fundamental concepts of employment laws, codes, and regulations, including EEO, FLSA, FMLA, and Cal/OSHA and applicable provisions of collective bargaining agreements

Required Education and Experience

Education: An associate's degree or equivalent number of college units (60 semester units or 90 quarter units) including at least 15 semester units in computer science, information technology, or other fields closely related to the job requirements of this classification from an institution of higher learning recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Foreign degrees and credit units require translation and equivalency established by an agency recognized by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Experience: Five years of experience in troubleshooting, designing, testing and maintaining multi-site local, wireless, and wide area network infrastructure OR three years as a LACOE Senior Network Engineer.

Equivalency Provision: A bachelor’s degree with major coursework in computer science, information technology, or other fields closely related to the job requirements of this classification, from an institution of higher learning recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation may substitute for one year of the required experience. Foreign degrees and credit units require translation and equivalency established by an agency recognized by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Additional Requirements: A current and valid Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Juniper JNCIP-ENT, Palo Alto Networks Certified Network Security Administrator (CSNA), Fortinet Network Security Expert (NSE) 6, or Aruba Certified Mobility Professional (ACMP) certification is required and must be maintained valid during the period of employment. A valid California driver's license and availability of private transportation or ability to provide transportation between job sites is required. Positions in this classification may be assigned to work a non-standard workweek and be subject to on-call duty 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Hybrid remote schedules may be available. To ensure the health and safety of its staff, LACOE may require employees to provide evidence of full vaccination against COVID-19.

Candidates who meet the minimum requirements above will be invited to participate in an examination that may consist of a Training and Experience Evaluation and a Technical Interview.

Candidates who pass all exam parts are ranked according to overall exam score and placed on an eligibility (hiring) list. Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks. Eligibility lasts for 12 months; however, additional recruitment may occur under a separate bulletin with additional candidates being merged onto the eligibility list. Some positions that involve public contact may require bilingual proficiency for which selective certification may apply (Education Code 45277.5). In addition, the eligibility list resulting from this examination may be used to fill vacancies in related job classifications for which no eligibility list exists (Education Code 45272). Veterans' Credit may be awarded for entry jobs.
