Rockstar San Diego is on the lookout for talented Technical Artists who possess a passion for inventing and improving workflows to enhance game development. As part of the Technical Art team, you will work closely with Artists across all studios to ensure they can efficiently create and refine Art to the highest standard expected for our titles. This is a full-time permanent position based out of Rockstar's state-of-the-art game development studio in Carlsbad, California.
WHAT WE DO
- Bring innovation and resolution to technical problems and challenges throughout Art production - from content creation through to the game.
- Create and maintain tools that improve our Art creation/editing workflows.
- Provide general support for Art team and document/share solutions/knowledge with the wider team.
- Proactively use knowledge and experience to identify and solve problems before they affect the Art team.
- Work closely with fellow Technical Artists as part of wider global team working on interconnected tools and systems.
- Collaborate and communicate with other departments (aside from the Art department) such as Core/Runtime Tools and Engine teams.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- This is a Technical Artist position with an Environment/Material specialism. This means the tasks, while varied, will relate mainly to Environment Art (materials and 3D assets - structures/exterior/interior/terrain/prop/vegetation).
- Creating and developing tools to help author high quality environment art in large open worlds.
- Writing standalone tools (in C# and/or Python) which will help glue the various packages and inhouse tooling together into a cohesive pipeline across environment art.
- Creating pipelines for procedural art generation using various internal and 3rd party tools and seamlessly integrating these processes with manually authored art.
- Setting up automated processes to propagate changes across a large number of art assets and help support environment artists in their day to day work.
- Research advanced procedural processes and cutting-edge emergent tech (such as Machine Learning) to help scale without sacrificing quality.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A relevant degree or professional experience in the game industry as a Technical Artist or Artist.
- An online portfolio showing relevant examples of your work.
SKILLS
- Experience using 3dsMax/Houdini/Photoshop/Substance.
- Knowledge of C#/WPF.
- Experience working with XML/Json.
- Experience using other game engines (e.g. Unreal/Unity or proprietary tech).
- Can demonstrate creativity and technical ability within the constraints of console development.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Effective time management skills to meet deadlines without sacrificing quality.
PLUSES
Please note that these are desirable skills and are not required to apply for the position.
- Experience in other scripting and programming languages (Python, C++, Maxscript, Javascript, etc.).
- Familiarity working and developing in a multi-platform, multi-project environment.
- Understanding in developing pipelines and creating efficient user interfaces.
- Experience using Mudbox/ZBrush/Maya/SpeedTree is a plus.
- Experience with DirectX/PySide/QT/OpenGL/GLSL/HLSL is a plus.
- Knowledge of source control (such as Perforce or GIT) and working on code base collaboratively.

The pay range for this position in San Diego at the start of employment is expected to be between the range below* per year. However, base pay offered is based on market location, and may vary further depending on individualized factors for job candidates, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective
business considerations. Subject to those same considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a bonus and/or equity awards, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
